Unable to use combat training

First, is there a way to check what mastery you have?
Second, I got a taming II mastery and consumed it, it gave me a message that I had gained abilities or something like that. I then got a book of masteries off a vendor and pulled the combat training spell out of it. The first time I tried to use it, I got "you are not on the correct path for this mastery"

click on the masteries book, from the context menu choose 'change mastery' then select your mastery.

Thanks, so simple yet two days of looking, not on post on what happens or how to select.

I have found uoguide.com to be very helpful since returning to UO; here is their information on masteries:

The information is also found here, in the uo.com player wiki, with one slight difference.

The delay between switching masteries is listed as 10 minutes, as per the publish notes https://uo.com/wiki/ultima-online-wiki/publish-notes/publish-90/
rather than the 15 minutes documented in uoguide.
