How does the Vendor Search database work? Are the shards all on the same server?

I was on two different shards and Vendor Search went down on both shards at exactly the same time.
I logged onto two more shards and VS was greyed out there too.
At exactly the same time it came back up to all three shards I was logged in to.

So, is the VS database for every shard on only one server?

I also have noticed that. Sometimes it shuts down for a short time, and its for all shards.
