While I am patiently waiting for this quest to be activated on Origin, I was pondering.

Now this quest is needed for both the Caddelite crafting AND the Halloween content....does it have to be done on each character you will be using or is it an account-wide type of quest?

I will be using my crafter..obviously...but also want to bring my other characters down into the dungeon when that is active...will I have to do this quest on all of my characters?
#1
this is a very good question
#2
No, you can do it once on a character and that will allow all your characters access to the event area - sort of.  Once you complete it the reason why will become apparent.  It's a fairly skill-independent quest though in terms of difficulty.
#3
Skill independent??  While I appreciate you trying to make certain skills more viable, dependency on certain skills is needed for this quest...I'm not complaining! So far it's very fun though I have neither skill needed for the first step I did manage to decipher  some things ;)

Thank you for the fast response, I know you're busy!
#4
I'm stuck!  I need someone better at puzzles than me to solve it *cries*

I think I know the letters and number for the lock - if I'm right that's 5 of them, how many different combinations of 5 are there? Several thousand I bet?
#5
You do? We are stuck on that part....and how did you get 5? We were thinking 4....4 cities, 4 mourners.....I am not a good detective lol
#6
5 numbers would allow 10k permutations.
#7
so need an alpha numeric code to open the trap door

super confused on where to go from here on finding out what said code would be...looks like a nice little let's sit back and wait for someone smarter faster prettier with more gold and skill solve it time for me
#8
Ya How did you get 5, this is driving me NUTS
#9

#10
AH COME ON!  Give me a hint!!?? Please!!??  I have tried everything, I am so bad with puzzles!
#11
where is the quest starting point?
#12
Alpha numeric means you need both letters and numbers - but I'm only guessing, I'm hopeless at puzzles too.  I worked on the initial letters of the 4 towns on the tombstone, plus the number of mourners - but it could be that plus the initials of the guy's name, plus the number of towns. Heck I just don't know!  I have no idea where to go from there.

Only thing I can think of trying is:

@Kyronix please kind sir give us a hint? pretty please with bells on?
#13
All the information needed to figure out the quest is there to discover.  Good luck!  >:)
#14
can we assume that other shards will be able to start the gumshoe quest sometime today?
#15
All the information?  Here in the GY?

All shards that have gone through maintenance can participate in the quest. Japanese, Taiwanese, and Korean shards will be activated after their maintenance later today (ET).
#17
Has the quest been enabled on Pacific?  I get the message: "I'm sorry. I have nothing for you at this time." when I try it through either the Vesper or Britain Town Cryer on Trammel.
#18
you need to use the menu?  it's on the top of his list.

Just had a thought, is there a clue in what the mourners say? I've noticed them saying things, but not recorded what they said.
#19
I am clicking on the first item on the menu and it still says I don't have anything for you...

Did you talk to the grave digger?
#21

I doubled clicked on the criers, choose the menu item for the RBG detective, clicked on Quest. That is when I get the message.  Same thing happens in Fel.

Is there a limit to the number of quests? I have outstanding quests for Dreadhorn and Zipi.

It is the same on Sonoma *frowns*

You can have up to 10 quests I believe.

#23
not the new type quests, no - do you have any of the old quests? accessed through the character's context menu?

@Fen yes, talked to the grave digger, read the tombstone, got the inscription off it, detected the crumbled floor, examined it and got the trap door. Now stuck - as is everyone else, trying to figure out an alpha numeric code with an unknown number of digits and no idea what they might be.
#24
it is not working on sonoma still so im trying to figure it out on origins and before you ask i ave plenty of room for quests the guy just doesnt have anything for me

Uhh, I'm on Sonoma.  When I try to get the quest, from either the town crier or Jasper himself, they say "I'm sorry, I have nothing for you at this time."  Intended?
#26
I have no quests on the context menu
#27
probably not the right quest arc, but i trigger senses books have been disturbed at moonglow lyceaeum.
#28
between not being able to get the quest on my home shard and not having a functioning character on any other shards i'm about ready to call it done
#29
First it said I had too many quests, so i dropped one, now it says I have nothing for you at this time..Siege btw. @Kyronix

#30
@Kyronix
So far it looks like at least Pacific, Sonoma and Seige are not activated
#31
sigh

yep same as I on Origin, on Sonoma I cannot get the quest,
"I have nothing for you" message when I try to do the quest on Sonoma
#34
I've confirmed that other quests from the Crier are accessible...just not the top one.
#35
#36
I"m just going to keep sighing until this either starts working, or my wife gets home.

For the shards where Publish 101 was not previously deployed, you will be able to accept the quest after the next maintenance.  Seems the employees of the Town Cryer are having a slow news day.  In the meantime feel encouraged to visit Origin, Baja or Izumo for an early look!  Sorry for the delay, still plenty of time left to loot the Treasures of Khaldun!

Update:  Good news!  The Criers located at the Britain Commons (Britain Bank on Seige) have gotten back to work, and will be offering the quest shortly!
#39
So it's "after next maintenance..and then 24 hrs after that" ? got it.
#40
sigh
#41
Oh lord Kyronix don't invite them to Origin!! ;)

KIDDING! The more the merrier! I will be gone most of the evening to my daughters school so I expect this to be solved by the time I get home! 🙂

There's a damaged gravestone and a hidden trap door in the graveyard of each of the 4 named cities.,

I'm assuming the quest will lead us to those places once we figure out the clue for the first one and report back to Jasper.
#45
I'm not so sure, I thought maybe the original tombstone was a hint to look in those other cities. Not any further forward having found them all though 🙁

#46
The quest appears to be available on other shards now, but only from Brit commons crier.

Yeah I hadn't read the book Jasper gave me at first so just blindly ran around the other cemetaries and found tombstones that highlight but using FE on them didn't do anything
#49
Looking at the last names makes me think they are anagrams....
#50
the clue to the code i'm sure is in the text also, one said about an immeseurable char count, another about the first letter to the right, another about shift. I'm no good at cryptic clues.
#51
#52
I"m sure you're getting ahead, I would think the opening quest would be regarding britain gy only...idk though..then I thought Born in vesper, so I ran around looking for anything related to his birth...nada...and didn't continue on that path though.
#53
good grief, not a code breaker. anyone have any luck yet?

#54
There’s a 6 and a 5 in it somewhere.
#55
#56
Drakelord, there is another thing about getting passed those guards.. if they are not looking at you, I ran right by them. marked a rune and was able to recall in at will. however you can not get passed them on the way out.. have to recall out... but i did buy all the tools needed before i left.

#57
That wouldn’t have happened if it was in fel.
#58
I dunno. did not try fel. I was going to just get to the mining part but was hoping someone would figure out this terrible code.

#59
I tried stealth-ing my thief in but no luck.  I also looked around the Sacrifice alter and around Shame thinking those words in the grave digger's dialog meant something.
#60
I need someone to explain to me why the lock says its an alpha numeric type lock, yet apparently the code doesn't have numbers ? Because either I"m really stupid, or what I just said is correct. I'm sorry but trying to figure this out all day only to find out someone had to use a websight just makes me want to log out....like forever.
#61
I need someone to explain to me why the lock says its an alpha numeric type lock, yet apparently the code doesn't have numbers ? .

Computer term for an entry field that takes letters and numbers but not punctuation. Plus saying it takes numbers makes people think that numbers are required.

#62
That was my point, it was misleading af...
#63
Okay so the book in the Lyceum moves around and with the time delay on detect it is VERY difficult to find it...just a heads up
#64
The surnames are a Caesar cypher, there are websites that will do it for you, or you could give it to an 8 year old to do as their homework.
#65
@Kyronix @Bleak It appears that the Prentice portion of the gumshoe quest is bugged for gargoyles. I ran through it twice with guild mates (a total of 7 combined runs) and any time someone had a gargoyle they never received the "your keen senses detect..." message.
#66
I completed the quest and still can not get in.  And Jasper will not let my character do the quest again.  This is on Pacific.  Should I wait awhile?

When you go back to Jasper for the last time, actually go into the room with him. Don't double click from outside. I assume you're doing the same thing I did.
#68
I had already been to that other website last night and nothing it gave me even looked like words, but wait the answers weren't normal words and one seems to be spelled wrong too! You couldn't make this stuff up...

So you went from "I"m no good at cryptic clues", to an 8 year old could do it huh ? I like many others on this forum, have ceased to find any value in your opinions, and I said that nicely so no one can find any reason to admonish me for saying what everyone else feels.

Try equipping the necklace you were given.

#71
is there a trick to finding the thing at the Lyceum? or is it just an exercise in extreme frustration?  I've followed the messages to 3 different locations using a char with gm detect and I still can't find anything. Being trying for almost half an hour!

Annd the penny dropped when I got the message in a classroom, no where near a bookcase. Search every bookcase in that library, not just where you get the message.

I was standing next to him when I clicked on him multiple times.  But it turns out I needed to be sitting in the chair across the table from him in order to actually complete the quest.  Before then the quest journal made it look like I had completed the quest.

I’m just saying you don’t need to necessarily refer to codecracker software to crack it, (once you know it’s a Caesar cypher) i’m Struggling in this quest as much as everyone else.

But thanks

I biggest complaint of the quest was the spawn rate in the Moonglow grave yard. It needs to be dialed back.  No way would my crafter have been able to deal with that.  My legendary mage had a hard time until he summoned a fire elemental to take the heat off of him.
#76
@Kyronix It would appear, gargoyles cannot finish the gumshoe quest. Once I speak to the Cryptologist at the Lycaeum, I can not proceed as I get no gump *keen senses*, to help locate the book. I have completed this same quest multiple times with my human char's and had no problem.
#77
Does the necklace have any purpose for the fighting in Khaldun?   And can we give the necklace to a character on another account who hasn't done the quest?
#78
Fen said:

I can answer your second question. I have passed mine around among my crafters regardless of which account they're on. As long as you wear it, you can go in.
#79
I have Problems to find the book at the moonglow lyceum. I get the *senses* message, but never found the book with detect hidden. Have i target the bookcases or the Floor to find it? Thanks for your help.
#80
I checked the same shelf 3 times after getting the message and only the last time did I find anything, it wasn't even that close to where the message was.
#81
With EC i did detect hidden for a longer time, but nothing. After logging to CC i found it quickly in the first room where i get the *senses* message. Maybe it was only luck ...
#82
5 of us were there at same time.  Took 3 changes to finally find the dang bookcase.
#83
That darn book is driving me crazy!
#84

@kyronix ; that book is so frustrating   please nail it down!   I have heard people on different shards tell me they gave up.. and dropped the quest... Sometimes  even a good twist is too much ...

#85
It doesn't seem to appear in the same place on all shards, so people are reading a guide or seeing a screenshot and assuming it's in the same room but it isn't. The screenie on the other forum showed it in a room on the opposite side to where we found it.
#86
Th book moves around. You can get the message and try and try and try..then go looking in the other rooms and get the message and find the book quite fast..
#87
Two things I read in this thread:
1 moonglow graveyard trammel is too hard.
2 it’s too hard to sit in a town and use detect hidden...

am I playing a different game to everyone else?
#88
Hehe moving books, I think I've entered the world of Harry Potter!
#89
I’d slither-in
#90
Yeah the moving book is annoying..I spent an hour and a half one night looking and gave up, the next morning I found it within 3 minutes....RNG, gotta love it! It is a bit of a pain but you know they have to make things a bit more difficult so people don't blow through the entire thing in one day. Just keep at it....I finally found mine in the room where the crypto guy is.

Kyronix can you please dial back the mongbat spawn at moonglow moongate, I don’t get time to press my “guards” macro before I get ganked by them on my sampire trying to do the quest.

Must depend on the shard.  On Pacific I almost never encounter mongbats at the moonglow moongate. The spawn rate of ghouls, specters, skeletons, and zombies at the Moonglow graveyard is a different mater.  It is a continuous wave after wave of 10+ with no break. Kill one and another one or two are immediately spawned.  If bodies stacked vertically you could easily make a mound higher than the buildings.
#92
Well Mervyn  I have fought the normal spawn in the Moonglow GY and even at the "normal" times it can get rather challenging for a crafter who btw may not have the hitting power of say a mage or fighter... you forget the average crafter has little in the way of boosts spell or fighting wise.. all those points go into crafting... so yea  Moonglow GY can be tough to do if not impossible without help.   So I can well imagine people asking for a dial down of the spawn a reasonable request.
#93
It's called Ultima Online, you're not supposed to do everything on your own.
#94
The best part is, you don't HAVE to do it on your crafter...I did and just summoned Blade Spirits and used invis a lot! Took longer but I did it.
#95

Ok this is the 5th time I have gone around the buildings looking for that dumb book... today!

I am now feeling like I want to toss the whole computer out the door ..that's how frustrating this is @Kyronix !   I have gotten the hints and all but still no book..  I'm a patient person and have been supportive of the game for 21 years but this is where I have to draw a line in the sand,

Even I don't have time to do this anymore..  Fun is fun but when a part gets you so frustrated to do violence to a poor machine its time to close the game and walk away..  I can see it being in a different place per shard  that's fine,,,, but it should not drive one mad.  Now I have gone through every and I do mean EVERY book case not once but a good half dozen times per trip to the Lycaeum.  Add up the time there friend... that detect hidden timer and the making sure you hit all the bookcases....  Im no spring chicken and have gotten to the same point the younger players have reached.... Fix this book in place on each shard in a different place if you must but do something before players walk perma away.

Yes its that bad...

#96

Yes blade spirits is a good tool for the low end magery most crafters have...

The trouble is getting it off to clear your self the space to pop in and do all the work before they spot you and decend on you like a horde of ants.

#97
Some people have said to search every bookcase, this is actually not the case, it is in the area of where you get the message, you will need to use detect hidden on the actual bookcase, you will have to go over each bookcase maybe 3 times. You can normally narrow it down to roughly 6 bookcases from where you get the message.
#98
Yeah and in the bigger rooms you can't detect all the bookcases before it moves on you because of the time delay between using the skill.
#99
It shouldn't be moving around and it should be near where you get the message, neither was the case when I found it.
#100
Im sorry  you must think  all only do this 1 time around...   sorry to burst your bubble  when I got the messages I did the bookcases  more then 5 times each in that area and then the whole room a few times too.. NO BOOK.  I have reached that point where I will walk off and let it go..  its not worth the headaches, stiff neck and anger.    Il let you al do the work and stuff and just buy what I want from it..  its not worth doing if I get so mad at the game I want chuck the computer!
#101
click use skill, click bookcase, wait 10 seconds (take a sip of wine), rince and repeat. I'm not sure how you're getting a stiff neck.
#102
when my guild was doing it, there was lot of us in the same room, only two of us found it in the same spot. when there was more people there, it jumps to another room quicker. maybe that's what it was doing for you
#103
Why is everything so much more frustrating than it should be? Moving books are frustrating, trying to get some of the resources with only 20 skill from JoaT is frustrating, suddenly having your runes to outside of the camp stop working is frustrating! Where did the fun go?
#104
You can gather resources with 100 skill, not sure why you’re using JoaT.
#105
So they have expanded the area that surrounds the encampment, so no more recalling to a closer area to it, you are now forced to walk in from at least 1.5/2 screens away, therefore you must now face the Guards when entering and exiting the camp since you CANNOT recall out of the camp, therefore you MUST wear the Necklace/badge to enter and exit.   However, you can recall out if you are INSIDE the dungeon entrance.  Be careful if you try this with Nonmage/fighter characters as you may be greeted inside and killed.  Of course, this is Tram only.

On the Fel side, there is no encampment, and you have to run in.  (I checked on TC)  But I have yet to check the Fel side on a prodo shard.
#106

Moonglow Zoo - I did it with a char that can only cast invis and is no better off than my crafting chars. Of course the undead are annoying, but what I'm wondering is why they always have to be killed when they're annoying? Killing monsters always leads to respawn - which is even more annoying;) Just lure them away - open the door from the cemetery and take them for a walk - if they are far enough away then you have your peace. Funny, that was the first thing I ever learned in this game - helped me over and over again up 'til today.

Book topic in the Lycaeum: I don't need a superdetective with GM Detect here. 50 Detect Hidden Skills are enough here - maybe even the 30 skills you bought. Either you have such a char or you put something on a free soulstone. On the area of the Lycaeum itself one runs off a little the rooms - 6 pieces at the number until the message comes : "Your keen. . . . etc. . . . " and searches only in this room.

Of course you have to invest a little more time here - but wasn't this game always a puzzle - today like 20 years ago )?

#114
Very well said Mene.

This whole quest was/is enjoyable to me. Seems I am alone?

I found it very nostalgic to mine and lumberjack and enjoyed the crafting side that I normally miss out on as I already own piles of thousands of resources. It gave a sense of what it would be like when they open a non transferable fel shard, where crafting and resource gathering will be worthwhile again.

2 points
  1. You only need to do the quest once, you just need the neckless on to enter the camp.
  2. If you'r logging to make spell books you need gm to get bark to make paper (yah I'm happy about that too)
so much drama shaking head emoji
#125
The Hiding and Stealth skills did come in handy in the cemeteries for my other characters.  Just could not move fast and had to take lots of breaks to keep stealth engaged.
#126
Please keep the thread topical.

Would be nice if whoever placed the house INSIDE the Glow cemetery to block the view of the trapdoor could get banned forever and ahve that house demo'd
#128

What shard is that ?   Housing was blocked for all grave yards years ago....  only one I know which had a grandfathered house is vesper's.  I believe that house is now gone too.

Ok @Kyronix ;  I have had enough of the hunt and peck of the book in this gumshoe quest line...

3 days of hunting for it is enough.  If this is meant to keep people from getting too far in the khaldun bit  you sure did a bang up job of it.  Consider me out of the running  I quit this maddening quest!.  If you need to get your jollies in thwarting players in this manner ..good luck in your next job hunt... As I expect many to have tossed their hands up and left as well.   If Petra and Larissa had a hell of a time finding it just think of the lesser enabled player..  In total I spent 10 hours looking for this book.. and have yet to find it.   So in my book this suxs buttermilk.

My suggestion, Lady Storm, is to wait until the book moves into the back room where the Cryptologist is, there are less bookcases to search back there and it's a bit easier.

What shard is that ?   Housing was blocked for all grave yards years ago....  only one I know which had a grandfathered house is vesper's.  I believe that house is now gone too.

Ok @ Kyronix   I have had enough of the hunt and peck of the book in this gumshoe quest line...

Thanks for your feedback, I'm sorry you are having a frustrating time.  I generally appreciate all feedback good and bad, I don't, however, think its necessary to make assumptions about my future employment prospects.

That being said, if you feel can you can engage in a respectful exchange I'm happy to offer some insight.  My first question would be, what is the detecting hidden skill of the character you are trying to complete the task on?

You guys REALLY need a like button...

Anyway, I've done it on both elven and human characters with 0 skill. The first day I searched for an hour and a half and gave up, the next morning I found it within 3 minutes. Since then I have been able to find it in a reasonable amount of time...less then 10-15 minutes and in different rooms, I only suggest waiting until it's in the back room due to the fact that there are fewer bookcases to search.

I’ve already said it but it seems it’s necessary to repeat. I am enjoying this quest, think it’s quite interesting and well thought out, I’ve had no problems locating the book. Very impressed with the caddellite buff. Not so pleased with the tram only camp oversight. Impressed with the quick fix on recalling into the camp.

would like to see caddellite armour be necessary to resist Khaldun creatures.

Despite finding the new content a bit frustrating (I am now GM lumberjack so I can move on!) I do think a lot of thought and work went into the quest and the crafting part. We all make a fuss and whine and get annoyed but we do appreciate the time and effort spent by the Dev team on our behalf. I think the Detective part was maybe badly worded in a couple of places and the moving book is making some people a bit crazy but overall the ideas were good, so thank you all for your hard work.
Kyronix should get the title 'The Unflappable' no matter what is said to him or how it is said he never loses his cool, he is a true gentleman!  🙂

You can stay on UO as long as you make some of the lesser used pets have the same end build as  Cu or Hiryu.  Skree, Ram, Dread Spider, Bake Kitsune, Ki Rin, and others but start with the Ki rin.   They will not be Overpowered.   Start with the Ki rin.    Thanks 🙂

@Kyronix ; sorry for that bit  I was very angry at the amount of time I spent at this book finding. I will state that I am not one to quit  but I do run the quests as given  but this time I have given myself a super migraine looking for the book.  I have tried the bit of waiting till I get the message in the  cryptographers room.. I went over those book cases at least 5 times... thinking it was like the hit on the area a few times it should pop up visable...  nope.

detect hidden is slow   ok I can see why it would fit right in the quest  it has a element of seek and find which some like to do.  I am known for having the patience to pick apart most tangles..be it jewelry or yarn balls hehe    This I found is the straw that broke my camels back.

I really tried   I have read all the posts in both stratics and here on this book finding and after a total of over 10 hours of looking I had to toss my hand up and say uncle. Im not one to do this normaly.

I do hope you forgive my ire and I am sorry for the quip

Make sure you are clicking the books and not the top of the shelf.

I appreciate the sentiments, and appreciate the passion that you, and many have for our little world - keeps me at the keyboard each day!  I also appreciate your apology and of course forgive you.

The key to finding the bookcase with the hidden text is to make sure you have enough detecting hidden skill (the more you have, the better) and to search in the room where you get your message about finding the books.  Good luck!

Ya lucky I have soul stones to transfer my 100 DH to other characters other wise I would be a bit POed as well

OMG.... hehe @Kyronix ;  Hun in all my 21 + years in UO and owning 54 accounts I only have 1 gm DH ...and he is on Siege!!  its fantastic for t hunters.

Now that explains my poor crafter's luck.

I have done this quest on 4 characters, 3 humans and one elf, all with ZERO detect hidden and have completed it each time.
#141
I managed it with no detect hidden it only took about 20 minutes to find the book, but we did search the same shelf 3 times.
#142
I really had only one problem where it took forever to find the book, Pacific.
#143
The book part of the quest is very not fun & annoying...respectfully. We don't all have 5 hours to look for it.
#144
Any suggestions please? I just came back a few days ago & have been doing the Gumshoe Quest.

My gargoyle character gets NO message when looking for the book. I've clicked Harrison numerous times & get his gump telling me to look for the book. I've tried on foot & flying (thought maybe flying was bugged). I've run around the Lycaeum for hours over 2 days now & not once gotten the "Your keen senses..." message.

I've tried detect hidden each bookcase regardless of never seeing the message, to no avail.
Any possible help to get this quest finished would be  GREATLY appreciated.

I'm about to give up.
#145
You have to buy points in DH from an NPC for a Gargoyle to find the book.
#146
Ok...   I oil clothed off my savage paint, soulstoned off a skill, went & bought 29 Detect Hidden from the Guildmaster Thief in Cove then went back to the Lycaeum.

Found the book after getting the "Your keen senses...." message on the 1st bookcase I clicked. Wasn't aware you needed actual Detect Hidden skill since I'd been able to do the quest up to this point w/ zero real skill.

*Problem Solved*
