Shadow Hounds are the current top tier 1 slot pack pet. A pack of five GM skilled Shadow Hounds can tear apart foes with lower Physical Resist faster than a 120 Chiv+AI 5 slot pet can.

But is Enemy of One sufficient to keep the Shadow Hounds alive against a strong foe ?
The problem that I have found with Pack Pets is that they do good damage but, are very vulnerable when getting hit... does this mean that it always is necessary to have another Tamer around using a strong pet as a Tank ?
That is, "solo" hunting with pack pets against strong targets is never possible ?

Hunting with a pack is difficult, it needs a particularly skilful player to do it successfully. I have to admit that it is beyond my capabilities.

There's a few different tactics for hunting with a pack. Yeah, you can have another Tamer's pet (a RC+AP Beetle does great for this, while also amplifying the pack's damage) tank for your pack.
Or you can use "As One" to split damage taken between the entire pack, and heal them up with veterinary, but this can be risky if they're taking high incoming damage, and "As One" will eventually drain all of your Mana (it's a mana hog).
You could slot level one of the Shadow Hounds to 2 slots and give him higher Resists, Wrest/Parry, and have him be the main tank as you run "As One" with a pack of 4. This will increase the pack's tankiness but somewhat decrease their damage output, which is why i'd suggest adding Armor Pierce (applies a +10% damage taken debuff for 3 secs to victim) on that main Shadow Hound to somewhat offset this.
If you're partied with a full Bard, they can run "Invigorate" to heal
up all of your pack, which is a very powerful combination when you're
running "As One". A pack that's under the effect of a Bard's "Inspire"
will also deal devastatingly high DPS.
I've tested the combination of a 6x120 Bard/Tamer running Inspire+Invigorate with a RC+AP Giant Beetle tanking, and a SW/Tamer with a 5 pack of GM skilled Shadow Hounds that were under "As One", and the damage output is just absurdly insane.
The biggest weakness of a pack, even with "As One", is AoE damage. Wither, Poison Strike, Whirlwind, Frenzied Whirlwind, or certain Boss AoEs, can still wreck a pack.
