Rare colors do not produce seeds. But if you want to be sure you can do a test planting by putting the seed into a plant pot or raised garden, double click on the mound to bring up the plant gump, go to the pollination gump, check to see if it says it produces seeds, go to the dump the pot gump, dump the contents and you get back the seed no worse for wear.

To get more rare colored seeds you need to do the Naturalist Quest / The Study of the Solen Hive Quest. It helps if you have also done the The Solen Matriarch Quest so the solen do not attack you while you are doing the other quest.
