How come that attacking Merchant Ships does not affect one's own Reputation/Karma ?

I find it absurd that, disabling and looting the Hold of a Merchant Ship without hurting the NPCs Crew does not have any effect on the player doing it....

At the very least, I think, it should hurt the character's Karma....

They are peacefull NPC Merchants minding their own business and attacking them brings no repercussions ?

I do not find it logical.....

Here I thought you had to kill the NPC Merchants and scuttle the ship.  Have I been killing
them when not needed?  And I take the karma hit as I am neutral and capture pirates also.

Well, I would kill them anyway. They can drop cargo for one. The other is, if you don't kill them do they respawn as a fresh ship and crew quickly or does it leave just half plundered ship and crew and a longer respawn?

You should gain fame and karma for killing gargoyle s and orcs.
