Here's how I got to GM poisoning on a mage on release New Legacy:
  1. Buy 50 fencing or swordsmanship skill from the advanced skill trainer in Trinsic
  2. [Optional]: Buy 50 focus from the advanced skill trainer in Trinsic so your stamina regenerates faster and you can do infectious strike faster
  3. Raise your chosen weapon skill to 90 by killing animals
  4. Buy 50 poisoning from the advanced skill trainer in Britain
  5. Apply regular strength poison on a weapon to 60 skill
  6. Using the infectious strike weapon ability, poison animals or monsters with regular strength poison to 67 skill
  7. Using the infectious strike weapon ability, poison animals or monsters with greater strength poison to GM
Alternatively, you can cast poison field at champion spawns, but my experience is that method is substantially slower.

You can now drop your weapon skill (and focus) to put your other chosen skill on the template. If you're already at the cap, chose and easy to raise skill to lower. Resist is a good choice because it's easy to raise with the quest.
