Is there a way to turn these messages off?

I hate seeing these messages. Is there a way to turn this off?
And why do you see them if you are dead?

this picture is from September. I just keep forgetting to post this.

I died when the boss appeared next to my feet. It took awhile to find the healer because I was running blind. all i saw was this message about everyone getting scorched.

Have you gone to User Settings and turned off Overhead chat yet?

I'm not totally sure, but maybe also turning off 'enable poison messages on others' - a little further down on the same screen as @Victim_Of_Siege shows

I'm guessing if I'm using CC there is no option for that since there isn't any overhead text menu option??
