Vendor Search Timing Out

Ok, who forgot to index the database? Simple searches are timing out on all shards. Just tried three shards for a single word and all timed out.

Looks like someone needs to update statistics on the DBMS or something. ASAP.

Does anyone care? Honestly. A simple search on Great Lakes for 'Horned Runic' barely comes back after 2 minutes. Barbed Runic times out.

Seriously. Index the database already. Do you need help? This is like data management 101.

Game seems more unstable all around for the last month or so. Get lots of connection lost messages at some point during most play sessions, and vendor search works some days and not others. Did not mind so much when the game crashed every once in a while but now it appears to be a nightly event.

Vendor Search ALWAYS go Banana, when the devs are working o a new patch.
this is no coincidence that only after the Castle contest started that VS went crazy.
you can also notice that at least 3x last week uo.com was down , so they are having some sort of database issues.
so here we will suggest again and again and again.

@Bleak ; why not create 2 different Vendor Search?
1 Just for regular vendor
1 just for auction safes
i believe by having 2 databases will make the search easier?

but yes, to the main topic, it is impossible to use VS now, sometimes you search today and the next day while you doing something total random the window will pop out of nowhere with the result, even while you hunting or pvping

@Larisa - What are you looking for and what shard? I do have timeout issues sometimes on ATL but for the most part I find what I need.

I think you might be thinking the opposite of what the message is telling you. You are saying you are only typing in one word which is the exact opposite of "refined" (you are broadening). The message is telling you to give it more detail; not less (ie 1 word). For example if you are looking for some armor legs for your mage and just type in "armor" or "legs" it's going to be sorting through hundreds if not thousands of items. Refine your search. That means maybe type in "leather legs" (if that's what you want) or add some stats on there that you want which will further refine it.

I've found that most (not all) of what I'm looking for will find MUCH more success by using the option boxes rather than just typing in something. So if you want a tangle; instead of typing in "tangle" just select "Belt/apron" slot and then go to stats and enter 10 Int. Click search. It will return results pretty quick. There will be some items that might be hard to do this with (EM items w/ no stats etc) but for the most part this will get you what you need 80% of the time outside of ATL.

easter not EASTER should work and search high to low and leave default prices in.
Try alacr detect or trans detect. For scrolls do scroll detect and you will get all 3 if they are there, PS/Alac/Trans.

Quiver is easy. Back slot checked with +5 Archery.

Scroll of alacrity always helps to use the actual name (ie "Detecting Hidden"). I just did this search on Orgin (assuming your shard) and within 10 seconds it says no items matched my search.

On the Easter items; you don't really have specific thing so I can't really help you narrow it down there but again if you want an "Easter Egg" that is what you should be writing; not just "easter".

You are correct and anyone telling you that vendor search is working has not used it much.

It started timing out a few weeks ago on all shards. Right now on LS you can do any search and it will time out and the results will show up about 10 minutes later. Unless you try searching over and over, then the results will show up every 5 mins or so for as many times as you tried.

Some days it works everywhere without issues.

So use a toon sitting at a bank. Do the search and if it times out, leave him still until the search appears, then grab the scrolls to go to the vendors.

Lots of Easter Baskets. Also every item I could think of, I went and looked. They all have the word Easter in them,

The floating Valentines candles and the picnic baskets are also kinda Eastery.

Try it on Atlantic. I bring things over there to sell and I try to VS prices....for the past week I have just thrown stuff on my vendor for whatever I think it's worth because VS does not work there.

Origin has like...9 vendors lol, so of course it works there

It took a while on Atlantic, but it gave me results for easter. Most things are 100k + Theres some easter basket grass for 45k.

Geese and Dragon Eggs are 200k.

I want some more of the little chocolate Bunnies, those are cool to place around your house.

I use it every day. It did not work earlier. It did work when I checked again.

I am on earlier than normal. I am usually on at 6pm C. Check Atlantic at that time if you are so sure it works. But also I check daily. I am about finished running guys around from the artisan festival. Been looking for things to bring back home on many shards every day.

It does work some times and does not work sometimes. You do not use it as often as I do.

Exactly. Vendor search does not work all the time. It has deteriorated in the last month or so.

It also does not work on small shards at times.

I can not help the fact that it works sometimes and sometimes shows the results 5 mins after it says it timed out. I have no control over it, I just use it a lot.

I've been having this issue as well. I decided to test out different locations to try a vendor search and came up with mixed results. I tried on two different servers to make sure it wasn't just my server and had similar results. The places it eventually worked was very spotty. Those were at banks and Inns. It never worked inside my house. The only place it worked every time was when I was standing inside the EM hall on Sonoma. Still haven't tried that on Atlantic.

I don't think anyone is saying that VS works flawlessly or really ever has (I've always had intermittent issues regardless of shard). The point I was trying to make is that even when VS is acting up, I've found that using those check boxes to find an item (when possible) returns a result most of the time. You don't always need to use them but when VS is timing out this is what I've done to actually get results.

Looks like they got the stats updated - the search is working better now. Returns in a reasonable amount. If this is the issue when setup a script to run every day to update the indexing statistics daily.

If you need DBA help let me know. Its been awhile but not that long since I used to consult DBA's.....

Vendor search basically hasn't worked correctly since the new patch. Time outs. Not returning full results. Timing out... then the search popping up 10 minutes later out of the blue.

It began happening as soon as I patched up. So that seems to have been the catalyst.

Not every day, all day. I have found I get better results early morning or late evenings when not a lot of people are on. Say I search for Melissa's Cloak....I type in Melissa's Cloak, check the box for *Cloak* put a minimum return bid of 1 Mil gold and hit search.

On the weekends during the day, it will time out 90% of the time with the *You're search took too long...*

In the morning it will return results fairly quickly.

Really needs to be improved. Works fine one day and not at all the next. Last couple of months game seems to be really struggling. Lost connection messages becoming a routine part of game play now. At least for me.

I have accepted its server resources vs no. of users concurrently searching, so I will come back to try later when VS load is reduced.

In terms of gaming experience, I find it quite disruptive when I planned for 1 hour of gameplay for a particular day, and VS does not work when I needed it.

Legacy should be a different server.

And you are right assuming everyone from Atlantic to every other shard login to this one server concurrently.

The problem here is that none of them come here to say anything about, everyone , everyone is having problems with VS and @Bleak I guess CANT fix.
We already asked them 100x to say something, even if it is like: "Guy's , We dont know how to fix" but at least is something, the lack of communication or the forced silence about the situation is that make this a very upset situation.

But TBH, VS break at least 1x or 2x a week, even without any new publish. so I will suggest you something!

No he doesn't King Greg offered him a great solution to help fix the stability of his indexing issues, he refused the advice. Until it gets fixed 100% people are going to be critical, considering it is the number one topic on these forums.

I was up last night until midnight PST on Arriang and Oceania and VS was supper fast on both shards. I do a LOT of searches when I send out my shard hoppers looking for good to take home.

@Bleak Today around 1:00 CST on Great Lakes I was able to search in VS for items by name or part of name, example: ess achiv and get proper results in a timely manner. I decided to check a few things on Atlantic and found that if I put in the name: Dragon Turtle recipe it came back as timed out. I did this twice same results, however if I added: not gargoyle only, not elves only, not cursed, not brittle and not antique I was able to get results.

If you refine your search it helps a lot. During busy times it tends to be slow or not work at all. Especially on Atlantic because people are always adding/buying off vendors.

I find that if you are looking for an item, it's best to add a minimum cost so it doesn't have to search through everything that's 100g etc. Say I want to price a rare colored plant. I know those are at LEAST a million gold...so if I want one of those peculiar snowfluff trees....Input Peculiar Snowfluff Min Price 1,000,000 and I get results fairly quickly as it's not having to search through lower priced items.

Splintering Blade Min. Price 500,000

Just an example of what makes VS work most of the time for me even on Atlantic.

I liked the old days when you could just click exclude from Fel and set the results high to low.

You could see every item on any shard within seconds. Except the ones in fel.

Some nights it’s up some nights it’s down just like about everything else in this game. Read reviews of UO from years and years ago, even before vendor search, and see exactly the same problems mentioned that people still complain about today. It’s an old game, just accept that it has a lot of quirks that will always be there. I use vendor search a lot and like a lot of other things in the game it frustrates me when they don’t work but I still enjoy playing the game.

They did try to fix it with a new version of vendor search a few years ago. I thought overall it worked better than the current version although the print was so small it was hard to read. But, after a trail period they went back to the old, now current, version of vendor search.

After the NLS project is completed, why not create a browser-based vendor system, where we can shop via browser and the purchased item will be shipped from vendor shard to player's mailbox. (Code is simply to delete the item from the vendor, and copy the item to the buyer shard)

Can such a database be more efficient if the search is not performed in-game? We can even browse and order using our phone while traveling, taking a break at work, or during lunch. Then when we login to play in the evening, the item is already in our mailbox in our castle.

Perhaps it can also be traded for gold or cash - to be decided by the seller. Why do we still stick to the old rules where we cannot trade digital items for cash. We have been buying digital books for years with real cash. It's time to modernise.

That was SearchUO and the only vendors that were listed were the ones in Luna and he had to go to each house to ck their inventory.

The think the point being if a player can do it several years ago the developers should be able to do it better..

VS covers all vendors not just the ones in Luna and they search the database not go to each house individually. I know what you are getting at but can they write/use a 3rd party program to interface with UO and extract that data (read only).

Wow. Just searched, at 8:15 pm PST, for a bunch of slayer spell books on Atlantic using just the drop downs and VS was giving results within 5 seconds instead of timing out as usual. Did a few searches for power scrolls and the results were coming back in under 20 seconds. @Bleak if you did something it was wonderful.

They have tried to fix VS many times recently. This last publish was supposed to do something with the data base.

But one problem is when someone says VS is not working. Some poster will try it at 2 AM for an item that only needs 1 click menu and they will post that VS is fine.

So who are the Devs going to believe? An angry person that disparages the devs or the calm person that says VS is working.

If you look thru this thread, I stopped posting because a couple of posters kept saying it is working every time I said it was not.

It works often if you can use the clickys but when you need to use words it times out when things are busy. There are no clickys for deco items. If you check all the boxes you get only armor and jewelry.

OK I just found and opened an old account, it is now an EJ Account and guess what I can use VS. I did a search with no problem and then tried another search and it told me I had to wait 1 minute to do another search. Well I am 10000000000% sure that there are people out there that could open multiple EJ Accounts and write a script to do searches with a time delay so no two accounts are searching at the exact time. @Mesanna @Kyronix @Bleak @Misk it is time you put the people that pay your wages first and remove EJ Accounts from any and all Vendor Searches. I can well understand how there might be players BOT scripting UO Vendor Searches in order to find the "good deals" for items priced low and buy them to resell them high.... and that, in doing so, of course they "clog" Vendor Search with all of these multiple, repeated queries....

What I cannot understand, is how come it is not possible to find a way to block players from being able to use these BOT Scripts within Ultima Online and for Vendor Search Queries thus creating then ptoblems to all of the other UO players trying to use Vendor Search the "proper" way....

Again, guessing wrong. I have 4 paid accounts under my EA master account and those are the ones I use, feel free to visit my castles.
My brother has his own EA master account that does not pay into Ultima , but at my request for sentimental reasons he opened the EJ account (maybe one day I will convince him to re-subscribe, but with all his businesses and family one can only hope).
And no, we do not live in the same house,,, not even the same continent, but when we each started our accounts we both did live in the same house. and I am privy to his password. And I dont need him to get a max circle, because I have enough toons on my paid accounts to get that by myself, thank you very much. I have learnt that avoiding words that may be common to many other things helps. Eg. today I was searching for a "strange tissue paradox" I searched for "strange tissue" got the red message from hell. Then I wrote the whole thing: "strange tissue paradox"... got the red message of timeout.
Finally I thought that "strange" appears on way many items, so I searched for simply "tissue paradox" and voila, the results appeared. (also it was during a non peak hour.. I haven't found a way to beat high traffic times.. then it'll be red message to no end.

Searching by using the built in filters only is the ideal way. But that is not always possible, they need to add a few skills to the skills list (spellweaving, for example) If they would add that and possibly the levels that Power and other scrolls come in, it would work great. it's when you add any word to the "item Name" search criteria that it gets Laggy and times out.

I'll be honest, I've seen people complain in Gen Chat about VS not working but VS was not an issue for me this weekend at all (on ATL). I was able to return results using just the toggle boxes but also search with just words (I used things like "veteran rewards"). My searches were all in the afternoon or evening as well so it's not like they were at 5am.

The results from searching for vet rewards did take a minute or so to return but I literally went through 6-10 searches (hitting the search higher prices items toggle) successfully without it timing out.

The fact is, VS only work fine at early morning than after that it will time out.
Evenings and Weekends you can forget about!
I am not a programmer but it make sense that somewhere out there the system is getting overloaded

I know how. Apparently you didn't read the part where I wrote that I can post screenshots everywhere except HERE.

Please send me a pm telling me why you cannot post screen shots here, because quite obviously other posters have no problem with the process.

No, I am referring to posting in this forum, everywhere. I do exactly the same thing I do to take a screen shot and post it on everywhere I post. But only on this site, nothing happens. No image!

You have save the picture on your device and upload it to your post. Using the icon above on the right.

You can not paste a picture on this forum engine.

Actually you can, you copy the picture then hit that icon in the upper left of my pic and then hit control-v. that's how i put this one in
