Players with character names that exceed 16 letters

Hi, I have seen a lot of players around that have characters that exceed the client limit of 16 letters. Can someone tell me how this can be done? If it's done with cheat programs (which I imagine it is) is it illegal and can we page on said names?

 Trying to get my mind around someone taking the time to cruise around counting the number of characters in someones name and wanting to page on them for exceeding said number.......... Sounds kind of Perverted to me.  Might look into recruiting you into PERV  we are short on stealthers to cruise around peeking in Luna Windows.

Ignore the naysayers. What is one of these long names?  There might be an easy explanation.

I don't recall the exact names, and even if I did I wouldn't post it (against forum rules?) but at the time typed it out it and it was exactly 22 letters in a row with no spaces... used some website to count letters to verify. For example, it was something like: aaaaabbbbbcccccdddddee . I even tried to make a character with the exact name in both the CC and EC and I couldn't fit it all in at character creation - they are both limited to 16 letters (including spaces). 

So not titles then.  Perhaps the name change token allows it. Paying $10 USD to buy the token from the store might give you the ability to have a long name.

Try copy and paste when making a name? That works in EC on some pet names.

  It is probably relic characters that were created between update 1 and update 2 of pub16 there was 4-5 days between updates where you could exceed 16 characters. I believe the bug was created in update 1 and fixed in update 2 but that has been forever ago like 2002ish. 

For a long time it was possible to get 17 characters with a name change token. I know this because I've renamed a few characters in the past with 17 character names. But it seems the character limit for the tokens has been changed to 16, and I know that because a few months ago I tried a 17 character name, and it didn't work. Not sure when that change was made. Anything longer than 17 characters though, I dunno how that is possible.

Making new chars. Both 18 letters long, both unable to be made.

in the past under the original character rename service GMs had to manually change a players name and sometimes they exceeded the limit.

now it is probably the use of a 3rd party client.

I want to be able to name one of my characters "King Arthur".  There are several players already named this... but it's no longer allowed to be a title you can create. 

And that's okay.  Times change.  Just because someone else has something we can't have doesn't mean we should try to take it away.

  Yep I have a King Arthur a King of Trammel  A king of Minoc  Not sure when they made King a unusable word in naming.  But hey you can still make Queens if that is yer thing.

Not sure if it applies to names but you can't name a container Titan event items. It puts *&$ in the first name.

Anyway....a friend of mine told me that way back when they had the weddings you could have longer names, they would add the surname to your character. That's a possibility.of course depending on what the name is..or they made it long ago before the changes.

Seeing this a lot more lately again. Saw this gem outside of Deceit on Atlantic today. 'Hit Stuff Leech Life Win" is 8 characters longer than is allowed. Is this a bannable offense? My understanding is that it's a clear sign of either: client manipulation or 3rd party client.

Page on them, I would. Its easy for a gm to see if its legit or not. Whether they take action or not is another thing.

I made a toon when UO 1st started named ‘John the Minter’. I’d hang around Brit bank rping a smack talking banker (walk up to players n saying stuff like ‘Is that all in your account Sir? Your broke !’ , etc..). Everything was fun & games until Enron happened & I started saying stuff like ‘I’ll take good care of your savings citizens, I work for Enron!’. Got paged on in mins. UO had apparently made it impossible to name toons some npc character names, like minter or banker, since I had done it & I was openly being accused of being a hacker by many 2001 UO Brit Banksitters... and paged on my several.

Took a GM abt 5mins to get to the bottom of the situation after initially telling me ‘Before I ban your account for hacking in an unallowed name, I was just curious how you did it?’ The GM looked up my account age, saw that it wasn't illegal and even was allowed at the time the character was created. The GM apologized for threatening me and said the name was no longer acceptable and would have to be changed. After several suggestions he changed it to name longer then players are allowed, more of a title then a name tbh.

I still have this character on my oldest account. I cant believe I’m the only person ingame to have ever had this type name change occur. There are players ingame with legit names longer then allowed.

As for ‘King’ being unacceptable in name creation... You may have me to thank for that . During the 1st Halloween event where colored player bones were obtainable, I created multiple toons named ‘King Blackthorn’, killed them repeatedly for 10mins during off hours, then farmed their bones. Every RPer and rares collector wanted a set & they sold extreeeemely well. UO blocked the name King couple weeks after. My take on it was, somewhere someone didn’t like the current King of Brit having his dead bones on display throughout the realms.

Back on Topic, I’d page on them & let the GM sort it out... if they’d even bother. It’s possible those characters were made illegally & incredibly stupid for cheaters to advertise such but many cheaters are just that stupid so...

Page & let GMs figure it out. An idiot that will cheat/hack to create names is certainly doing much worst. A legit player will be easily identified in a couple mins, as was my experience.

Ya you can't use a lot of UO profession names for city titles. Can't make Archer of City and many more.

Agree, the topic should be an easy one for GMs to sort out. You would think. Maybe they think the name is harmless? If they are still around.

Names in UO are NOT unique (like in other games).

There can be like a dozens or even hundreds of a "Princess Beautiful" if they chose to name themselves this way.

They are joking about a Forum for the OP.

It is in the ROC/ToS on many levels. Doing this is putting a target on your forehead saying YOU CHEAT. Using 3rd party programs that, at minimum, manipulate packets hit at least these four:

Nice try. The problem is, they usually can't prove it or care to prove people using 3rd party clients since they rely on VISUAL queues. Again, these players are running around with these names that are IMPOSSIBLE to do with a non-cheat client or client/packet manipulation.

To your example when these players post videos they could technically be on a free shard so it's not undeniable proof. I don't know what 'fast rotation' is but how can you tell for sure what players reactions are? I get it, they likely are 100% cheating, but it's not undeniable. 

ON THE OTHER HAND when their name is 30+ letters long when the maximum allowed by either client is 16, well, yea uh that is 100% cheat/hack client undeniable proof. When there is 100% undeniable proof and @Mesanna should instruct GMs to take actions according to their own ToS/RoC.

you can make names as long as you desire with third party clients amd even bypass some naming restrictions as well.

How much more blatant they can get?

Yes I have played online games since there was dial up. Sierra Online had many. I knew that phrase in the old days. Compared to the name I showed earlier in this thread, it was at least funny.

Like you said only his special players can see it. Since it is in Luna by the stable, well hidden from general view. And placed the day before the event.

It is the champ spawn that he mentioned at the last event. Maybe there will be many drops during the day? So, there is no specific time.
