New Legacy Shattering Update Plz

It’s been 5 years now, can we get any information yet on how it’s all going to work? Is it free to transfer off NL? What all can be transferred off? Is there a limit on items and pets? Can you make this information public to everyone on all your social media locations, news letter and email to get the word out to the "bigger audience"?

Also, shouldn’t all of the items be account bound and or even character bound (never going to happen)? After all we were told, and or led to believe, everything gets wiped or deleted in the shattering and only a few items, titles, and achievement awards would be available to be transferred off. That was 5 years ago. It's obviously changed because that would Never work with your player base. SOME of those over on NL are all for shard bound and even account bound but I'm sure this is the exception for them now.
It’s not about the items right ? So why do you need them if the shard gets shattered/ wiped and you start all over again with your new friends and a couple trinkets and titles? "It was supposed to be for "new and return players" to have an easier re-entry or beggining and to help with the learning curve and so on. But if we are being honest, if the items were to be account bound (lol) how many fewer players would be there? I'm sure most here agree and believe it would be very few. And those few there would only be there just long enough to get the new items to take back to production and only log back in when more new items are offered.

Do we know after 5 years what is going to happen exactly when it comes to an end ?
So when we do finally find out, will it be too late to do anything? SoL
Are any new systems going to be added to production from NL so the majority of players (paying customers) can get something new out of this 5 year long project as well?

I have seen talk about how much NL pets/items are going to sell for on production and that’s the only reason most people are playing there (let's be honest, they are already trying to sell them).  There are complaints of players already botting for that reason. Is that what the shard is to become, another bot/scripting farming place for the very few players to profit of the majority of your larger main player base (paying customers) that don’t like that play style or have time to create new characters just to be deleted to start all over again in a year?. Can we get something like a counselor program again to help out everyone new there?

Next season are you going to keep adding more and more items to bribe/lure “motivate” players there just to get items to take to back to production? Sorry, I'm still trying to wrap my head around this NL concept.  What is the point of all of this again please? Why not just do all of this on production, if all or a lot of the items / pets are going to be transferred over anyways? Seems like NL has just divided the players up even further and they are taking the majority of the resources.

The very weird thing in NL is this... There isn't a "we/they".
It is one "no drama-llama" community.

Q: What is the Shattering?

This will mark the beginning of the end of the season’s lifecycle.  There are fictional elements that will come into play, as well as gameplay elements to paint the picture of a world in turmoil.

At the conclusion of this series of events, the shard will close in preparation for the next season.

Q: What happens when the shard closes?

Veteran accounts will be able to transfer to the production shard of their choice (excluding Siege Perilous & Mugen).  This shard transfer will be complimentary and subject to available character slots on the destination shard.

Endless Journey accounts must activate a full subscription to transfer or purchase a token from the Ultima Store.

Q: What do I get to transfer with?

Characters will transfer with any skills & stats they have acquired on New Legacy.  Characters will be able to transfer select items that fall into the following categories,

Legacy Items, Pets, Decorations, non-consumable Ultima Store Items

A full & detailed list of what can and cannot be transferred off the shard will be available when the Shattering begins.

You cannot bring anything unique to NL, that was explained on day one, so anything that is in production you can move, then it was discussed that, armour you have in NL is crap compared to production and there will be no need to bring it over.

Basically you have wasted a year because your char is crap compared to production, your gear is crap compared to production, so anything you do bring will end up on a mannequin for display that no one will want to see

 This is EA and UO we are talking about.  If it cost Mesanna her job, they wouldn’t be working on future NL content/seasons.  They would have wrapped up the current bit with the new producer, migrated some code over, and moved on to….doing the same thing that they’ve been doing for many years.

You make a lot of good points and quite frankly I'm getting tired of playing it with so little info on what I even get out of it. NL is not fun, almost everything about it is a contradiction and quite frankly the entire shard devolving into "run these same 6 bosses and singular dungeon, thats it, thats your content" is getting really, really old. Nevermind that most of the gear from the BRAND NEW DUNGEON is actually worthless because it has the exact same stats as ALL THE OTHER BOSS DROPS.

A point of my own that I feel really explains how "wrong" NL is on so many levels is the "progression" feels too slow, while also being too quick for any new players to extrapolate anything meaningful from it (plus, you know, THATS NOT AT ALL HOW SKILLS WORK ON PRODUCTION SHARDS). Nevermind that the only content worth doing on NL is the mentioned above, but you gotta sit through a 5-8 hour "tutorial" thats just doing "run to point a and b" quests over and over with combat encounter so weak, regular mobs look like gods by comparison. All culminating in a champ spawn suddenly, out of nowhere, when everything else has been 100% soloable up to that point. Let people just skip this nonsense and jump right into the "actual game" (bosses and blackthorn) if you're not going to have them spend enough time in the overbearing tutorial to actually learning anything beyond the most basic of basics, don't waste players time with this crap. Thats not even mentioning that theres so many systems and mechanics that don't exist or are completely reworked on NL that it feels like some kind of private/free shard almost alien to the main game, and I don't understand how new players are gonna feel anything but overwhelmed or like they were given the completely wrong impression of what the game is actually like when transferring off from the shattering.

Lets not even pretend that any build is even worth playing on NL besides an archer/mage tamer. You can say "but so and so plays warrior", you and I both know they're at a massive disadvantage in doing so. If your characters aren't a tame mage and a crafter, you already messed up, but its not your fault, they gave you the impression you actually had a choice with their overbearing tutorial.

As for botting? I can at least report theres very little of that going on. MaDdOg is the only botter I've encountered in my month or two there. If there are others, they're nowhere near as blatant as him. Lots of multi-clienting, but botting, not so much.

The way NL plays is ~ok'ish if you just log in for a bit. Someone described to me that it is like a mobile game version of Ultima Online.

 In reality, if this were the way the game is on "live", like if Ultima was just NL I would not play it, it gives none of the same vibe, there is no real complexity or "meat" really to speak of. 

 Conversely, as a kind of boiling the game down to its brass tacks like this, experimenting and modulating to get to a new and solid "foundation" to begin anew from, in the hopes the current power creep can be addressed and a more forward thinking game design can be implemented ... I think that kind of thinking is good.

 I like a bit of complexity in crafting, maybe having to glance over some notes or light spread sheeting when it comes to building a suit for a character.. but the system now is like becoming a full on mad scientist mixed with a tinge of masochism and self loathing. That and the out of this world builds that are possible with extremely over capped skills and the like.

 Finding some way to "bring it back home" to be approachable should be found, and maybe NL is a step in that process. 

They could make that on prodo.. if the problem is because u can max out all the skill to 120.. u just do a 700-720 cap.. if the problem is because the intensity of the items is too high when you are adding every piece of your suit.. u can cap... -.-

You could even add an odin stick with godly powers.. if that mean the person gonna be naked, relying on resisting spell to get a little resistance 

They ain't even trying.. they making things worse with bribe events (greatly rewarding the wrong kind of individual)
And starting a new on their baby server.. déjà-vu with their baby client.
It's them giving up on prodo to work on a lesser version.. a mobile UO (lesser UO) could have been a great window.. I was expecting so much more from NL.. that launching trailer alone was

 To me, it seems like they recognize a need for some changes to the way things are. Do I 'like' what is here now? No. I don't like being spood fed the narrative quests, I actually play ultima online because I hate theme park pick up a quest and go do what the quest wants or makes you do. There is a critical element of freedom that is completely and catastrophically lost, and in my opinion to the detriment of the game. Also I'm not a fan of the overly hammy writing on display in the quests. I can take a little here and there but just cramming it in every sentence is not the way. I find myself rolling my eyes, and trying to find the 1 singular sentence I g.a.f. about close to the bottom of the quests that tells me kill bad guy over at bad place 0/15 or whatever.

 When I come to the forums, I see a lot of negativity, and I understand it, your game time is and should be a precious thing. Ultima Online is that toy box time we want, and when someone takes all our G.I. Joes , He-Man and Star Wars action figures away and gives us Pogs, when we want more G.I. Joes it stings a little. Makes me want to go over to other toy boxes honestly.

 Is NL a spot people are going to try and get a cool pet, or some kind of cool deco? Yes, absolutely. Is it going to be game breaking because the unicorn you can get on NL a different color of pink or shape than the one you can tame on Prodo? No. Will there be people that didn't want to play NL who want the unicorn? Yes? Will people sell extra unicorns to them? Yes absolutely. Can that be avoided? Yes!
Don't let people bring their unicorns from NL to Prodo. Is that the answer? NO!

 And that weird rant seems like what a lot of people are on about to me when I read anything about NL, mixed with "you're leaving PRODO to die to mess with NL", and there's no thought about what they are really probably trying to do, which is find cool new mud to sling at the wall in the hopes it can be brought over to Prodo.

 I'm not saying it's the best way to go about revitalizing UO, but the people at the reigns making the choice are willing to stand in the fire to find a way to bring new life to the game. I hate the mobile phone style approach of NL, but I don't think it's meant to be consumed as your full time Ultima play time, rather I think of it like a live test they are doing, and willing to give those that participate some unique gifts as a thank you for testing things out.

 I'm back from a long break myself, having dealt with real life family health problems, and no the game is not drastically different, it does need updates. It looks like they are trying. I'm thrilled with the way the browser version of UO looks, haven't tried it yet, but I'm going to, something of that nature is what I've wanted since they shut down the 3rd Dawn client like 20 years ago @_@.

 So much negativity, but just take a moment and think ahead, and stop looking behind. When I got sick and tired of the sameness or lack of any new content, I unsubbed, and enjoyed other games. I didn't sit around on the forum and try to convince who ever reads it the game is a disgusting joke, and don't sub. To be honest, it was reading about NL that brought me back. And while I didn't and don't enjoy NL, I've met some cool people on other production shards, and having a blast with them. I can see the start of changes, and I am hopeful for more in the future. Hard for me to say super negative things when I see what's going on. Honestly, I hope anyone reading this does find some joy either in this game, out of it.

it’s has absolutely nothing to do with items it’s more they spent 5 years developing this shard nobody asked for and the only reason anyone is there is because of the ITEM I promise you if you couldn’t bring items back to production you would never see anyone on NL. the devs are trying to get people over on NL to that in turn thins out the already dead shards more. 

Skett, I completely and utterly agree, if nothing transferred from NL, I doubt there'd be a lot of people there, who just playing the game to see it all get deleted a year from now. There's WAY more involved and engaging experiences out there for that kind of content, games that I don't play either.

 I'm not far along in NL, and I can tell you, honestly, it's kind of yack. If this was UO and I picked the game up for the first time, not knowing anything about it, I'd instantly uninstall, and never look back. Fortunately, that is not the case. It is not the UO experience. Hopefully it is not what they want to make the rest of UO. It's like a second little game to play on the side, maybe before or after a guild hunt on a main shard, slap a couple of angry looking donkeys, get a skill or two up, and check back a few days later. That's really the only way I'm stomaching it, but the assessment I'm making, they are trying to find a 'core' to build from, is probably what they are trying to do.

My advice to them is stop with the over the top writing making me feel like I need to read a novel to find out I need to double click an NPC two screens away. It is not epic. It is a waste of resources.

 Little things like the portrait creator are cool. I'd love to see that on Main shards. Expound on it. Let me be more customizable, that's good.

 And yes, be a bit more forthcoming with some concrete information. Not for my sake, but for the sake of what seems to be the vocal majority (not minority) of people here.

 Also Skett, if you were paying /playing for 10 years and haven't gotten what you want from the game, it's ok to take a year or 5 off and just see what else is out there. I came back, and game feels ~fresh'ish enough. Bumped into new people, had a blast. I don't need to be looked down or angled against because I wasn't here for the last 10 years. I took a break. It helps.

 And I don't want to advertise against Broadsword by any means. I played several other games, Project Gorgon was one. Highly recommend giving that a shake. The non-VIP version is full featured enough to have a heck of a good time, VIP is just that extra taste better too. Much better writing style, comical, and itemization as well. It's still 'early access" after like 10 years or so, but it's basically 1 man working on it, and his wife recently passed away, (who was working on it with him.) Game is gold if you want something fun, and comical, but there's a real complexity with the multi-classing, maybe not as robust as being able to pick 7 or so skills , but it's good.

 I've previously owned a Keep on Atlantic, castles on other semi-populated shards, and plats worth of items/suits/reagents and lost nearly all of that when I quit. Tons of veteran rewards / dye tubs / commodity deed boxes with 60,000's of many things from ingots to imbuing reagents. It's ok to let go and take a short break and cleanse the negativity.

I agree a break is needed for me I’m currently closing 16 accounts 9 so far are emptied and running out already paid time and the rest over the next month or two (if I don’t get kicked sooner) goal for me is to drop to only 2 out of the 21 accounts that will be on gtc only. 

 I mean no ill but, sincerely, I hope you are wrong also and can come back and discover it all over again and have at least as good as a time as I'm having right now when / if you do.

They have plenty of dead server.. they could start doing stuff on those.. like try adding a cap on intensity for the entire suit removing transfer shield on that shard (only keep the EA 14,99 transfer token if your account ain't flag as a cheater one).. making a Legit CC shard.

Step one would be a front store ea.com selling gold and everything RMT'ers does sell to clean them up to hire real employee like more dev power. No need to feed a medium size group with us buying from them RMT'ers; for them to "volunteers" doing "free" community work for their affiliates cards to be valid.


@Kel the NL concept ain't new to UO.. they been doing this for 28+ years with their TC shard.. if u mean the theme park concept is new.. yup and not what people playing UO looking for.. it's a niche to a niche.. nothing bright.. unless they keep downgrading prodo with stuff like my avatar picture.. now it could shine.. like EC did shine on the back of the CC; the lack of work on it. (downgrading the game so mythic/BS baby project can shine; most of us did not wanted nor asked for)

@kel like to make you realise something.. when AoS launch.. we had a lot of players that would only play on TC.. cuz they would refuse to do PvE (gauntlet) or crafting stuff like BODS, to be able to PvP in the top tiers.

They were too good for the crafting and PvE stuff.. real bad ass u know. 
Meanwhile the game went from 10-25k players to over 250k cuz of AoS.

They were mid range sandbox PvP players, at best.. too broke (not good enough at PvP) to buy the 1-2 artifact they needed, from a PvE players, to go back PvP. (more like bad griefer than real PvP'er)

So yeah the NL stuff ain't new.. the seasonal server with minimal grind was a thing 25 years ago.. and was real popular starting with the AoS launch.

 Trying to consolidate shards may be a good idea, and yes it'd be nice if they'd open up areas that aren't designated for housing to be so, especially if they could target high population shards such as Atlantic.

 I will stand by what I say, and remain positive and hopeful. I do believe they are trying to take features they are 'experimenting with' on NL to bring them to the rest of the game. And I get the feeling that is why skill ups are expedited in the way they are, and it feels all kind of quick mobile game style. You can get in, see what works, and in a not disfunctional way, come to the forum and say what you like about it, and what you didn't like about it. I feel like I've been pretty clear, I think it is as is, a horrible experience. If this is what UO was normally, I'd just pass on it. I'd be glad for the people that stay with it have fun with it, but I'd just stick to single player games, or sit in the yard more.

 To be clear, NL as it is, it is my belief that bringing it to prodo and forcing it on people would be the end of UO. Hands down. It is hamfisted, boring, the 'grinds' to make sure you are active there are implemented in a very 'grind'centric and in the way kind of way it can be. I can hardly stand to log in and just do a set of city quests, to slowly creep towards something just to have to run back to the guildmaster of the "Narrative path" I chose, to find out I have to do more of those cludge-daddy billboard quests so I can 'skill up' enough to continue on the narrative quest. If that finds it's way to prodo yeah I'd probably dip out. And I wouldn't skitz out and tell people they were lying/ stupid/ blind etc when or if I do, because I at least endeavor to not be a disfunctional forum poster.

 That being said, I do feel some attractive animal girls, and anime in the game be tops.

 Well, I'm gonna be at the town meeting tonight or whatever it's called on TC1, and will take the opportunity to directly address them, in whatever way i can, and I will ask a few of the questions you've asked, and let them know Skett wanted to know.

 From what I can see, they are working on updates to the CC, which if my opinion matters to you, seems like, (yes quiet long in the making) a sort of attempt to deal with these issues of botting/ scripting/ rampant hacking going on via the client being ancient as dinosaur ass and written intern level spaggat code. Does that bring with a litany of other possible issues? Yes absolutely. Should it be avoided? No.

 I have met someone who claimed they were actioned on multiple accounts for unattended macro'ing recently. I didn't ask the person, they told me. Yes they were pissed off. Yes they were in the wrong. And yes I laughed at them. That may be a positive thing to think about.

 The web based client seems like an effort to not just 'modernize' CC style game play, but possibly make some headlines in video game 'sites', to get the game some coverage. This is a good thing. More potential clientele, good.

 Despite having an absolutely critically negative view of NL myself, it was reading about NL that kind of made me want to scratch my UO itch. And while I was like nope, definitely not for me, it did cause me to resub , and bump into a new /fresh group of people. So, that's a proof in the pudding example of the press working to draw interest. Unfortunate that NL is hot trash tho.

 I mean I can sit here and disparage UO or the UO team or fellow UO players like anyone else, but from my perspective however blind/stupid / idiotic it may be in the eye of the beholder, it looks like there is concrete evidence that issues that are being brought up are actually being dealt with.

I told yall, Kyronix has been in charge for years.  UO has been his since 2011 or 12.  Mesanna answered emails, did the EM stuff, put up deco, and gave feedback to the new stuff they were making.

Keeping the trolls off them allowed the team to work.  How's GTA 6 going?  They were supposed to finish last year. And they have hundreds of programmers.

But starting out doing it on a production shard is the worst thing you could do, because putting aside that it's the wrong place to find serious flaws with the mechanics, it will piss off a lot of players who like things as they are.  It would be like consolidating shards to boost population levels - a good way to send a lot of people out the door, turning off their subs.

You offer to move them on a more crowded shard (like ATL or EU u could even declare them shards FREE CLIENT! and promote both of those) or any other unpopular shards.. since ATL and EU already working the way they does thing (closing their eyes)

But but all the spot are taken!  u could go in game look where u want your replacement house and the dev could clean a couple trees or rock to accomodate the move..

You may think they are dead because nobody is running around dropping runes to Malas malls or because there are plenty of prime housing spots, but they aren't dead, and their players cover their costs. 

And most players will not volunteer to move to ATL if they have a castle or keep or another prime spot, and lose not only those prime spots, but have to leave behind items (otherwise you're asking the devs to figure out how to move thousands of items over to ATL from each account). That's not getting into asking them to delete characters on shards they are moving to in order to make room for the old shard's characters.

One of my crazy ideas is to make shard transfers free and timelier, or at the least make it easy and cheap/free for players to shard hop whether it be for meeting up with others for dungeon crawling or to go shopping.  It might be a drop in revenue, but I question how much - if your account is old enough, you have a once-a-month free transfer, but I could see it leading to more player activity.  

Just make it for more people and allow for more trips back-and-forth. It would solve the problems for those who like their low-population shards and want to keep their homes and histories with those shards, but would like to meet up with friends on other shards, and it would make it easier for ATL players to shop on other shards (and maybe slow down the flow of goods from the other shards to ATL, improving things on those shards). When shard transfers were setup, and when the shields were added, I doubt the devs envisioned that they would be used to make a small amount of people a ridiculous amount of gold and real-life money by taking stuff from other shards and moving it to just one shard.

We could also do something like Connected Realms in Warcraft, where low-population shards are "grouped" together in that their players can connect with one another, raid with one another, serve in the same guilds, share the same auction house (or vendor search in this case), add friends from the other shards within their group, etc. My two WOW realms, my roleplaying realm (Steamwheedle Cartel for life!) was grouped with two others, and my regular realm was grouped with four others.  It also makes it easier for new players to find other people (and maybe we can stop encouraging new players to pick Atlantic, and instead pick shards where they have a chance of having a decent house within a month or so).

This is close to where I'm at - I think things have to change (or be added in this case) in some manner to make it more accessible to more people (or approachable as you put it).  I played around on Atlantic when I came back, but the prices were too much - I would spend the majority of my gametime grinding for gold (or selling my rares/vet rewards).

I've watched my kids learning to play, and it's not accessible to a lot of people who have tried other MMOs before UO, because the things that make it the original and best sandbox MMO are also things that could hold it back when attracting new players. That doesn't mean that the production shards have to fundamentally changed, but something needs to be tried for those who are testing the waters or trying to get a grasp on things.

While I would love a true high-resolution graphics upgrade, I know that's not in the cards, but thanks to Minecraft and a lot of Japanese gamers loving the pixel look, the graphics aren't the biggest barrier.  Ironically, being big Minecraft players means my kids have a better grasp on what a sandbox is than a lot of MMO players, but their eyes glaze over when we start talking about suits and weapons needed to attempt certain things. It shouldn't necessarily be the dumbed down approach that some other MMOs have where it's fairly easy to progress up the ladder, getting loot that you can actually use as you go, but we should have something of a middle ground between those and between the hours of building spreadsheets, grinding for imbuing ingredients, etc.

xx months?  It will be on TC soon, only have about 20 days to play NL until the next event is on Prodo shads.

If u talking about my ideas of making couple shard with different rule set like.. as u already mention they can do that on brand new server.. even better.. even if u said amazon server are pretty cheap.. i'd still use my actual server.. do announcement of the new rules on this server.. like x shard is going to be a legit CC shard.. u can accomodate people real easy.. building them a sexy island to fit a castle near x city coast, clear a couple tree or a rock.. on the shard they wanna move.. this shard is even more unique, with "unique" housing.. cuz it would make no sense to have 30 shards when 80% are mostly empty.. just cuz.. we hvn't try to accomodate people.

Every events, it's a bot fest, people can bareilly move.. I was not serious by saying shipping more people on those shards.. it was so dumb of an idea.. I thought it was clear.. and all u did is work on that hook; ignoring the very next phrase when I said x shard of their choices. -.-

Imagine everyone would ask to move on ATL have a unique castle spot and ebay it.. I mean c'mon now.. I won'T give them all the answers here.. even if I do, read between the lines.. -.-



@Grimbeard for them to move all those NL dungeon content on prodo would be dumb.. if they does that it need to be wipe from NL type of stuff or just a few of them.. a sample to promote NL on prodo.. they won't help NL by doing that; moving all the dungeon on production.. at this point just shut down NL if u don'T have another set of new dungeons for s2.

PS: if it mean they could give us back a couple of our old dungeon like despice and shame level-1; sign me in.

I can say with 100% certainty that NL has brought in new or returning players.  We have met new friends that either started on NL or have returned to try it out and then since followed us home to our home shard on prodo.  Those folks are immersing quite well into the variance of gameplay on production.

If you are testing a big system with events that may span weeks or months, TC is not the place to do it at scale, because last I checked, you can't transfer anything off, and so the incentive for people to really test everything and finish the quest is not there.  Plus, you've tied up a TC when you may need that for the normal publishes and hot fixes/bug fixes.

  Put it on a separate shard and let people transfer stuff and characters off to their home shards, and there will be people playing it to the end and putting it through the ringer.

As for changing up production shards, that's a good way to drive a lot of people away. I think it would be more interesting to do like WOW with the cross-realms, but allow characters to freely move between certain shards, and in this instance, we could have these groupings (matched by time zones for the most part):

• Atlantic
• Catskills, Chessie, GL, LS, Legends
• Baja, Lake Austin, Napa, Origin, Pacific, Sonoma
• Drachenfels, Europa
• Oceania, Arirang, Balhae, Formosa
• Asuka, Hokuto, Izumo, Mizuho, Sakura, Wakoku, Yamato (maybe remove the more popular one, I know one of them gets busy during their prime time)

The shards and their histories would remain so nobody loses houses or anything, but it allows people to fill out guilds and do hunts, events, etc. with more people so they get access to more people without shard consolidation. It improves access to the stuff we need or want, although we would still have the current problem of the RMTers and others buying cheap on the non-ATL shards and transferring it to ATL to sell at a massive profit. It might even encourage people to change shards for guild/friend reasons and if they have a cheap/easy way to move between shards within their shard group (say somebody on Legends wants to go to Chessie) they can more easily take all of their stuff between shards. It also means they don't have to delete characters if they have a full slate on another shard, and want to visit that shard with a character from another shard.

@Lokea funny thing about shard shields for me is I didn't claim any for years after I could have and the only reason i did was because item on my shard were way over priced of the items was looking couldn't be found. but there are pros and cons to transfers the biggest problem is shard bound the devs hurt players more with that stupid idea once again listing to their small echo chamber that only wanted it for own selfish reasons

So all what u were saying about fun and giggle is horse poo.. u agree with me the bribe is all that matters for NL.. without bribe no NL.. cuz the produce ain't that good, nor appealing for the UO players.

The cat was out of the bag when RMT sales really kicked in many years ago, because RMT drove so much of the negative stuff. There was a good thread on Crossroads (of Britannia, CoB) many years ago (pre-Tram I believe) that had a live team member or two talking about the potential of shared areas for people to meet up from different shards, and the problems that would result (which we now see with transfers). I think Calandryll briefly talked about the idea as well, and yes, somebody could argue that NL is a "shared area" for people from different shards to meet up, but this was about taking your production characters from one shard to a place where you met up with people from other shards.

As far as shard-bound, that came about during my last break, but whether we like it or not, there is a ton of stuff created for specific shards during events that winds up on other shards, and that pisses off some players who don't like competing with the botters/scripters/etc. on their non-ATL shards, knowing that the botters/scripters are only there trying to get that stuff to move to Atlantic. I see the pros and cons of the shard-bound stuff. I'm a big proponent of shards keeping historical and event items that are unique to them, but I also know players want to legitimately move between shards (as in pack up their houses and move) and take their items with them.

It's somewhat of a moot point, given how easy the RMTers are able to do their thing. $20 tokens may seem expensive, or shard shields may seem inefficient, but not if you're making a lot more than that or have enough to make scheduled runs between shards.

At this point, if they wanted to try something new, but easy, in the same vein as what I mentioned, I'd say at least make it easy/cheap/free to move characters around between groupings of shards, like say Catskills, Chessie, GL, LS, and Legends. I don't mean loading up your household of goods on a bunch of packies and loading backpacks and bankboxes to the brim. If somebody wants to move a train of packies to Atlantic loaded with goods, let them use their shard shields or the $20 tokens. If you're on Chessie and want to prowl around Cats, GL, LS, or Legends to find a new guild or people to hunt with, or maybe even make a housing move to one of those shards, or to find a bow you can't find on Chessie, make it easy.

When Blizzard did their cross-realm stuff back in 2012 to help populations of the smaller shards to find guilds, friends, raid partners, auction items, etc., they still had over 10 million active subscriptions, but they recognized that what MMO players usually want the most is other people to play or interact with. It'd be cool in UO if you were on a smaller shard, and could click a button, and pop over to another shard for the evening with one of your main characters to do some hunts with others or events or whatever and have everything in your backpack and access to your home shard's bankbox, and then return home later that evening.

On paper, it was one of the part that I liked the most about NL. "the hub" the Legacy hub. ^^

Find out.. it's only an extraction server (at best, if it's bribe worthy); that is nothing like UO.
