I was working on a project in game but came to a road block when I realized the character limit on a book is 500 ish? Not sure. Could we bump this to 400k-500k ish? To make it viable to write/transcribe actual books? Feel like this would be a good q for kyronix.
would also be nice to make instruction manuals and such along with the library and runes. the possibilities with a higher character cap on books for role playing is endless...
The Japanese shards transcribe many RL books into UO books. They copy the RL books to multiple 200 page books, then place them in a backpack engraved with the title of the book.
It’s not perfect, but it works. In an ideal world, books wouldn’t take lockdowns, so player libraries could fit all their books into a single building.
I have my library spread out over 3 buildings currently, as does Library Cafe on Asuka. Lockdowns are the ultimate enemy.
In terms of increasing pages and character counts, 200 pagers get buggy enough as it is, they would have to make sure increasing the length wouldn’t break something. Most numbers in UO are artificially limited by the 32 bit integer at 2,147,483,647.
Yeah, to echo Scribe the issue really is the buggy nature of books. More characters would be wonderful, especially to ease up on my library lockdowns, but the inconsistent way all three clients interact with books is far more pressing. The WebCUO is entirely unusable when it comes to books. It displays text copied from outside of the game into books as unreadable black blocks and removes characters at random from the text if the book is unleafed. Further, there are discrepancies in how the CC and EC display characters for the same book. Hopefully one day we’ll see these issues resolved.
