For a new vet award how about ethereal pack animals? They would only be usable as pack animals. They would be untrainable, have no capability to guard or kill for you. Monsters would ignore them. They would recall with you. If you die they would follow you around and keep what ever was in their backpack. The contents of their backpack would be dropped if you put the ethe in your backpack.
