I "Roleplay" that every merchantman I attack (which is every single one I see) is really a smuggler and I scuttle their vessel and "confiscate" all their illegal goods. I do have a soft spot, I seize the ingots but leave them the ore...

I do not. Most trader ships that I run into are gargoyles. Gargoyles are already suffering the shame of:
- Missing an item slot
- Missing all of the luck, stats, and skills items that go to that slot.
- Missing a mount.
- Missing the damage reduction that goes into mount slot.
Gargoyles are the unwanted step children of UO. No need to make their lives shittier.
