What is this contest?
A house decorating contest for Halloween!

Where is the contest being held? 
All shards!

How can I enter? 
Simply decorate your home for spooky season and post a picture here for all to see! Be sure to post the house owners name, name of the house, location and shard with your image!

How long do I have to submit my design? 
The contest will run until 11:59pm EST on 10/31/2023. Any posts made after that time will not be considered for the contest. 
Voting will then start on November 1st and run until 11/7/2023 at 11:59pm EST. The winner will be announced shortly there after.

What can I win? 
Mesanna herself will be placing a sign in front of the winning house stating it won!

Who can enter? 
Anyone with a house on any shard and any facet!

What are the rules?
It must all be items in the game. They cannot be photo shopped or added to the image digitally.

Can only ONE shard be a winner?
No! Each shard will have their own winner!

Interesting.  Our guild is currrently building a huge haunted house for a player shard event on Origin.  Perhaps we should enter it.  Keep your eyes and ears open for the official date notice of when our fun Haunted House Event will happen!

(they are with Pinco's UI)

this tells them the exact location (facet numbers, etc)

This Trinsic swamp graveyard-adjacent castle is my pride and joy. It is my favorite house of all that I own, and I've spent countless hours since I came back to UO in 2008 building, finding items, and tweaking designs to make it uniquely mine. With various rooms dedicated to the bisection, dissection, destruction, and outright torture of humans, elves, orcs, gargoyles, and animals, there's plenty to see.

It's packed with EM items, server births, rare items and suits. Nearly everything you move your mouse over or container you can open will be interesting.

Thanks for taking a look, everyone, and I hope you enjoy my castle. And, maybe, come up with some interesting decoration ideas of your own by looking at what I've done.

Good for big house owners you can pick one area! I just wish the reward was something not stuck in the ground but a trophy of some kind the owner could move with him or her when moving house. People with small houses move alot..I would hate to leave this reward behind me if I got one..I would be so proud placing it in the next house.

I think the Dev team made the right call. That trophy would undoubtedly be sold for plats given there would only be one per shard (and who knows if it would stay on the shard).

Was thinking some inscription , with name of the winner.  When the player moves the sign will stand there in the middle of nowhere or even block house placement, But im sure you are right , if it can generate gold someone will sell it.Could it be account bound?
I have castles so I wont move but im thinking of other players who most likely want to move to bigger and bigger places if they are that good in decorating... ;)

Dixie, that backpack art is the best I've ever ever seen. Just fantastic! I want to climb up the path to that castle ruin. With stakes a hammer and some holy water of course. lol!

Hi... I'm Tara Woods. I wanted to submit my house for the Halloween contest. It's on the Atlantic shard. Coordinates are: 39.22 S by 41.58 E is what it says on the map. In this house it is like multiple murders happened and the owner of it just loves collecting the bones of her victims. Her name is Patty. The name of her house is Patty's Horror House. Inside you will see all of her many victim's bones and skeletons laying about. She is also a collector of statues. Patty loves her statues. She loves them so much she made places for her to sit outside on the porch with them just to watch them and be with them. Please consider Patty's Horror House for the winner. Patty would just be thrilled to win!!

Enter if you dare Do not be fooled by the tempting refreshments on the steps, as your lips are surely dry from the sheer terror that awaits you. Choose your destiny either travel up the ruined stair way of despair, be wary of the pumpkin king avoid his black gate as you may be lost in it forever. Only the bravest will make it beyond but will likely to find themselves victims of an evil spider if they stop to pick her delicious apples. If you resist the urge and travel further you will meet death herself and her savage dragons, only too have your skull and blood added to the many poor souls under the tree of blood, forever feeding its lifesource.

The brave soul who dares to enter into the main structure feeling its radiating evil as you push open the heavy stone door, you will quickly think something sinister is going on here, as you climb the floors to the top you begin to question your decisions realizing what is really going on in this place of evil. However once at the top you frighteningly see the torture devices, even gazing over too see the great Mesanna's bones laying on the sacrificial alter. Realizing then what possible little hope is left, you given and sadly fall victim to the the Mad mages unholy quest to build their army of the dead.

Out front are some event items and Undertaker that sells rune books to all cemeteries and Pumpkin Patches.  Inside is an area for rituals and a crazy dark elf whipping up some concoctions. In the back are gravesites to honor those who have passed over the years and each site has a bone container with their name.   I hold events each week in October for players that turn in the bone containers from cemeteries.  Weekly prizes are given every Friday and  smaller prizes for Bone Hunts randomly during each week.
Nothing to fancy here, just items i have collected over the years and a place for my events.

hi guys, this is my haunted mansion. Thornwood Manor. the owner is  Valkyrie Goddess and it is located on Atlantic. i will post a detailed map pic with the house pics.  im also writing a story to go along with this dreadful place. and a special thank you to my husband who pretty much let me wreck his new 18x18 so i didnt have to demolish mine =) lol

Evil lives in the heart of all men. The majority of people suppress the darkness that grows inside them till it is merely a fleeting thought that enters their mind and is fought back down to the depths effortlessly. Then there are that very few that for what ever reason, maybe even lack of want cannot suppress the darkness, it devours them consumes their soul into blinding blackness...and sometimes even more rarely that blackness overflows out of them poisoning the land and everything they touch. And thus our story of  Thornwood Manor begins with a man so full lust for power , flesh and money grew a blackness so dark that it eventually devoured everything and everyone who was unfortunate enough to have drawn him from the cards of fate.  pics got a little out of order but meh what can ya do....stop by and give er a look ...HAPPY HALLOWEEN ALL!

So we are having a Player Event on Origin.  Our Guild NPH has built an entire castle Haunted House located in the Swamps above Trinsic.  Doors will open On Friday, October 27th @9pm est and gates will be provided from Luna & Britain.  There will be trick and treat stations throughout the castle as you explore each room.  There will be surprises and maybe even a few scares.  There will also be a teleporter that will take you to Fel Dagger Isle to our other Haunted Castle for some good ole fashioned PVP fun!  We hope you will join us.

Eigil’s Castle of Madness

Shard: Europa

The Castle Madness is a multi-dimensional maze, consisting of various physical and mental challenges as well as red-herrings, traps, and amusing, hand-written anecdotes within.

At the front gates sits a mighty “Secret Chest” surrounded by various riches and fruitful treasures ripe for the picking. The chest itself has an unknown code which may deciphered by completing the Castle of Madness and discovering the clues within. The clues come in many forms; notes on bodies, books on shelves, and NPC’s within who, if given the right queues will respond with their own advice and answers – Some true, some false.

The reward for the first to discover the code to the chest is great indeed, for within is a mighty horde, squirreled away by the legendary barbarian Eigil himself, who you find slumped by the entry stairs, never letting the riches from his sight, even after death.

There is one final twist, found within the parlour, which will test one’s observational skills should they look longingly into the mirror… But the soothsayer’s words.

I could tell you here but… Where’s the fun in that?

The Garden

Lit by the soft light of a flaming torch or lantern acquired from the Grim Steward, you are met with a traditional hedge maze to kick things off. There are various artifacts to explore within, but tread carefully, for not all paths lead to dead-ends… Or was it the other way around? Special thanks to Mim Foxglove for rising to the challenge of my commission for so many hedges. I am eternally grateful.

The Parlour

In your quest for clues, you should find a busy parlour before you. A maddening floor of runes, traps, and unusual paraphernalia offer distractions and tribulations to hamper thy progress. Bones scatter the area, proving that madness comes swiftly. Or were they just here a very long time?

The Jail

The jailor has long since departed, but the remains of Father Christmas know no different. A bleak, fetid room devoid of cheer you try desperately to navigate your way through gates rusted shut by the passage of time. It gets no better.

The Cloister

A once charming garden of enchantments, the Cloister, has now fallen to ruin. With crumbled flagstones, and rampant foliage, the cloister's only inhabitants now are a drunk who knows more than he should and a cat named Pumpkin. 

Many have succumbed to the treacherous walkways and ended up in the jail below, but still they try. Few make it very far…

I'm sure Barb will tell you that it is ok.
I helped her with the placement of the pumpkin for the coach
you have to place goza mats in a 3X3 pattern 
and raise them until they are the height of the spinning wheels
then place the pavers
(i believe they are bronze pavers dyed with bright orange natural dyes)

she didn't mention that you can actually walk up inside of the coach too

@Mene_Drachenfels thank you! Yes, please feel free to use the idea. I was blessed to have Cinderella help (thank you @Cinderella), by putting the pumpkin on a platform and raising it up for me. As she said you can actually walk up the stairs and into the carriage. *smiles*

I was really hoping something like this wouldn't happen. There are brilliant and unique ideas in all of the designs that were offered. It's really unfortunate that anyone come into the thread to tear one of the winners down. I think it's exactly the kind of thing that would keep some from participating at all in the future.

Can't we just focus on what you're seeing that you love about any design you've seen, whether the house was claimed a winner or not? That's the fun part, isn't it? Oh! Look what so and so did here! And this and that is so clever, never saw that before!

Lestat's trompe l'oeil, fooling the eye into seeing the house as a water scene blending with the coast, is fantastic. And so is Dixie's super detailed work, with something clever and fun everywhere you look. 

Come on, you guys.

The issue is the contest was a Halloween themed house. His dock may have been cool but it wasn't a Halloween dock.

Yes, working for a couple of days on a brand new design and losing to someone who threw a few pumpkins on a house that had been built for a while does make someone not want to participate.

I'm not saying anything in defense of one person. I'm saying this as someone who knows 99% of UO didn't enter because we all know there will be one person who will vote 100 times for themselves and win no matter what. He tossed those pumpkins in his house so technically there was "Halloween" Deco and then he could enter so he could get the rare sign in his yard. Most have given up on contest - such as the Castle and Keep design contest - because of this. He could have at least tried.

And same for the Castle contests.  Players make crappy designs so they do not win.  Sorry to break that news to you.  Now we know why your favorites do not win, they are not popular.

Also the ignorant posters also say Guilds always win.  One of the largest Atl guilds got less than 10% of the vote. 😂

I guess the writing contest is rigged also. 😂

One suggestion then. 

IMO there should be, in future Contests of this kind, some type of "weighted average" mechanism between Shards: clearly Low Pop Shards had less entries, and so less competition (some of them had only one single entry, so the Victory was assured! 😂 ).

What about, e.g., considering Winners the best 10 or 20 designs, independently of their Shard?

Let's be clear: mine is NOT a judgment of the quality of ANY of the Houses I saw (from winners or not), but clearly on ATL the competition was more fierce that anywhere else, so some very good design were automatically "left behind".

And, yes, I'm sure that someone is thinking "Why then some of the ATL Players didn't build their house elsewhere?"

I think that the reply is obvious: to do so one should be albe to move stuff (even a lot) between Shards, considering the abysmal market assortment of many Low Pop Shards...

On my part, however, given that another participant on Chesapeake couldn’t seem to figure out how to post pictures in order to enter, and with the crappy turn this thread took I’m going to decline the prize. 

The fun part was found in doing the decorating to begin with and in having an opportunity to see the creativity of the other entries. As for the rest of it, the fun’s been sucked out of the room at this point.

As for constructive ideas, it would be nice to have a random judge to pick the winners. I don't know if the core team for Broadsword are back in the office or if its all remote but buy someone a coffee during their break and ask them to judge. Hell, ask the barista.

Yes Pawain that is exactly it...............
There is nothing wrong with the dock but it simply is NOT the best example of a HALLOWEEN THEMED HOUSE. If it was a contest for best fishing house, no one would question if it won. ANY of the other houses could have won and I'd have no issue.

A random person judging would help with claims such as one person voting 100 times for themself, guild's voting to ensure the lost of a rival, and UO team favoritism.

She decides what is made and not made, so she makes everything. She deleted her own stuff when memorials were changed.  Get over your petty jealousy of a house made for a community to meet.

I had @mesanna eaten to the bones by the cats in my Entry AND the House was "full-Halloween Themed" (Black Cats, Pumpkins AND a Lovecraft semi-quote - from "The Cats of Ulthar", if anyone is unfamiliar with H.P.L. writing). 

Shouldn't this make me an automatic Winner of SOMETHING then? 😂 ;)
