How do I put an item on a display case or table?

The title is the question, having real trouble with this. I was able to place globe on a low table but wasn't able to center it. When I try and place something on a regular table or my display case it simply tells me I can't do it.

you have to chop the display case.
place the item where you want to go
use deco tool to raise it.
then place the display case again.

Aha, okay thanks for the info.... that is a headache, but I will work on it.
