Interacting with other people's posts, why do we only have negative methods?

I'm really starting to wonder why people don't understand that a forum is not a democracy, but a platform to simply exchange opinions. Whether it corresponds to the opinion of the developers or "most" of the players is completely irrelevant.

It is failure to abide by this rule that gets posts deleted, not negativity in itself. You can be negative, as long as you're also constructive and not abusive to other posters or staff. It is the posters who believe they have the right to insult and denigrate others that find their posts disappearing. You don't have that right. Be courteous.

What part of your post would one think I 'liked' if I gave your post just a thumbs up? There are many different things that are stated in the post and if I just 'liked' it, one would think I agreed with everything. (please don't think I'm picking on you. Your post was the last one so I used it as an example)

 Likes can be used as a way to tickle someone's vanity. Who isn't guilty of 'liking' a post simply because it's a post by someone they like? 'Oh! That's a post by my bestie'!  *hits the like button*  Or you like a post and then a few days later you see that same person has 'liked' one of your posts. Now you have a 'like' friend? I dunno. Maybe?

And the exact opposite happens as well. There really isn't any true honesty and integrity in buttons. People weaponize these things these days.

I'm all for making people state, in their own words, with their own thought process, what they think and what their opinion is. It's an exercise that we all need to practice more.

This is a big part of real life for all those who spend large ammounts of the day playing. If you don't like it, you could play another game maybe?

And then we have those that lose focus of the topic of conversation and start attacking the individuals by using tactics of crass insults and baseless assumptions.

That's when any hope of meaningful conversation has been lost. 

A post doesn\t need to become a meaningful conversation, it is not even an intended effect or pre-requisite. Some ideas are there to be considered, pondered upon or ignored (among many other viabilities, as it were). Do you agree with what OP proposed, or not. No need to start rambling diatribes, IMHO. and therein lies the beauty of the like or dislike button, it can speak volumes... for those who understand.

What on earth made you conclude that a like button is a vote of any sort? That pipe might have been lit a bit too often.

and no-one would have had to read my thoughts on every comment had I been able to just show at each post my like or dislike towards it   *shrugs*

Agreed. One can simply state what they wish to state.

Think this forum is fine the way it is.  Players can say anything they want and do making positive, negative and neutral comments.  Don’t see that often what gets deleted so can’t comment on that.  Some posts do deal with material that can be liked or disliked, for example one player answering another on how to build a template, but other posts, like most of the ones in this discussion dealing with a player’s feelings on this topic, do not.  Players make both positive and negative comments about each other’s posts sometimes, well maybe often, in an undiplomatic way.  That’s just the way this forum is.  Personally if I really like what another player said I will say so just the same as other players do.  Think because of the diverse nature of this forum’s posts a rating system is just not appropriate.
